Locally Preferred Alternative

NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors approved the selection of a Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA) for the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Route 440 Extension Project in May 2011. The project would help support Jersey City’s planned development on the Hackensack River waterfront while easing traffic congestion along the busy Route 440 corridor.

The selected alternative includes a 0.7-mile, two-track extension from the West Side Avenue Station, across the existing station’s park-and-ride lot, through the block between Mallory Avenue and Route 440, and across Route 440 to a new terminal at the north end of the planned Bayfront development on the Hackensack River waterfront. The extension would be constructed on an elevated viaduct and would include a new center-island platform station.
